Independent Criticism. African Culture. Global Conversations.

Culture Lens HQ is an independent platform for art, music, and cultural criticism, committed to examining the works, experiences, industries, and ideas shaping contemporary African culture. Rooted in Nigeria. Engaged with Africa. In conversation with the world.

01 / Our Purpose

///Editorial Mission

We examine the meaning, quality, impact, and context of cultural expression through independent criticism, reviews, and analysis. From popular music to contemporary art, our mission is to deepen understanding and encourage more thoughtful engagement with culture.

We believe culture deserves more than applause. It deserves thoughtful scrutiny, informed debate, historical context, and criticism that challenges conventions, interrogates power, and expands how we understand the world around us.

02 / Our Scope

///What We Cover

Music Criticism

Afrobeats and popular music, albums and singles, artists, music videos, and the evolution of sound across the continent and diaspora.

Live Experiences

Concerts, live performances, stagecraft, audience experience, production, and festival programming.

Arts & Film

Visual art, exhibitions, theatre, literature, film, and performance, examining both the work and the ideas behind it.

Cultural Analysis

Creative industries, cultural identity, representation, institutions, commercialisation, and the ideas shaping public life.

Festivals are one part of this ecosystem, not the centre of it. Covering popular music does not limit the platform to entertainment reporting. Our differentiator is the depth and independence of the criticism.

03 / Our Standards

///Editorial Standards

We value independence, intellectual rigour, fairness, context, and accountability. Our reviews and criticism engage with the actual work or experience, support considered judgments, and preserve editorial independence.

Independence

No pay-for-play. Editorial decisions remain ours alone.

Rigour

Critics engage directly with the material, never with secondhand opinions.

Context

We place work within its cultural, historical, and industry context.

Accountability

We hold creative institutions and industries to account.

04 / Our Vision

A Leading Platform for
African Cultural Criticism

To establish Culture Lens HQ as a leading African platform for art, music, and cultural criticism, building a trusted body of critical writing and cultural documentation with relevance across the continent and internationally.

We are not here merely to record what culture produces. We are here to interrogate what it means, examine what it reveals, and help shape the conversations through which its significance is understood.

05 / Submissions

///Submit for Editorial Consideration

Culture deserves to be examined, challenged, and understood.

Culture Lens HQ welcomes submissions from artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers, performers, galleries, labels, festivals, and cultural institutions working across Africa's creative landscape.

We consider music releases, films, exhibitions, live performances, cultural events, and other artistic work for potential criticism, review, and editorial coverage.

Important: Submissions are assessed independently on their artistic merit, cultural relevance, editorial suitability, and contribution to wider cultural conversations. Submitting work does not guarantee coverage, a review, publication, or a favourable assessment. All editorial decisions remain at the discretion of Culture Lens HQ.

06 / Events & Access

///Invite Culture Lens HQ

Bring us into the cultural experiences shaping our time.

Culture Lens HQ welcomes invitations from festival organisers, concert promoters, galleries, theatres, cultural institutions, and creative organisations presenting work that contributes to Africa's evolving cultural landscape.

If you would like our editorial team to consider attending your festival, exhibition, concert, performance, screening, or cultural event, please share the event details, programme, location, dates, and relevant media or access arrangements.

All invitations are considered at our editorial discretion. Attendance, access, or accreditation does not guarantee coverage, a review, or a favourable assessment. Our editorial judgments remain independent of event organisers and their promotional objectives.

We welcome opportunities to experience culture firsthand while preserving the critical distance necessary for honest and meaningful criticism.

07 / How We Work

///Our Editorial Process

Independent Discovery

We consider submissions from artists, cultural practitioners, creative organisations, and institutions, alongside work identified independently by our editorial team and critic network.

Expert Assignment

Where appropriate, selected submissions are assigned to verified critics based on their expertise, interests, and suitability for the work. Critics are expected to engage directly with the material, exercise independent judgment, and produce criticism grounded in their own informed assessment.

Editorial Review

Our editorial team evaluates contributions for relevance, originality, accuracy, critical depth, and alignment with our editorial standards. Submission, assignment, or access to a critic does not guarantee publication or a favourable review.

Independent Pitches

Culture Lens HQ also welcomes independent pitches and original contributions from verified critics. Our contributors may develop their own reviews, essays, analysis, and cultural commentary, subject to editorial standards and publication decisions.

We believe criticism must retain the freedom to question, interpret, challenge, and disagree. Our editorial process is built around that principle.

Our commitment is to the integrity of the work, the independence of the critic, and the trust of our readers.
